The 4th of July is just around the corner, and while we love a good backyard BBQ and sparkling skies - our dogs? Not always so much. Fireworks can turn even the chillest pup into a bundle of nerves, and an anxious dog is a major flight risk. Did you know more pets are lost on July 4th than any other day of the year?
At Bed and BARKfest, we’re all about creating calm, cozy spaces for pups to feel safe and loved - and that doesn’t stop on the holidays. So here are some of our favorite tips to help your dog have their best (and safest) 4th ever.
Tag, You’re It!
Let’s start simple: check that your dog’s ID tags are securely attached and up-to-date with your current contact info. Double checking their tags is a simple step that can make a huge difference if your dog slips out during a moment of panic.
GPS = Peace of Mind
If your pup wears a GPS collar (we love our Fi smart dog collars!), make sure it’s charged and active. These smart collars can send alerts if your dog leaves a designated safe zone like your yard, giving you peace of mind when fireworks start flying.
Tire Them out to Keep them Calm
Tiring your dog out before dark can really help reduce their anxiety around fireworks. Try an extra walk, extended playtime, or book a session with K9 Kardio to burn off excess energy and naturally lower stress levels. Making sure they’re nice and tired before sunset is a simple yet powerful step in helping them cope more comfortably with noisy celebrations.
Practice Makes Chill
Help your dog get used to the sounds ahead of time. Search YouTube for firework soundtracks and play them at a low volume while doing fun things your dog already loves - treats, walks, or playtime. Slowly increase the volume over a few days to build their tolerance in a positive way.
Stock Up on Soothing Snacks
Frozen Kongs, lick mats, and long-lasting chews are perfect distractions. Not only do they keep your dog busy, but licking is also naturally calming and helps reduce stress. Premier Pet Supply carries some of our favorites like the Woof pupsicle, lick mats, Kongs and more - check out your local store or order online for delivery before the holiday!
Create a Safe Space
Set up a calm, cozy retreat where your pup can feel secure during fireworks. A crate covered with a blanket works great, but a quiet corner with their bed, and any favorite toys, can help too. Familiar, enclosed spaces help ease anxiety and give your dog a sense of safety.
Turn Up the Tunes
Drown out the fireworks with calming music, white noise, or even a fan. Creating a sound-buffered, cozy environment can do wonders for anxious pups.
Consider CBD
We’ve seen amazing results with CBD oil for pups dealing with anxiety - whether it’s fireworks, thunderstorms, or just everyday stress. We carry a trusted, pet-safe option that you can purchase on our website here!
Don’t Feed the Fear
It’s tempting to comfort your dog during fireworks, but excessive coddling can reinforce their fear. Instead, stay calm and act like everything is normal. Your confidence helps your pup feel safe and shows them there's nothing to worry about!
Every Dog Is Different
Every dog responds to fireworks differently - some snooze right through, while others need a little extra comfort and care. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, and that’s okay. What matters most is knowing your pup and setting them up for success.
From all of us at Bed and BARKfest, we’re wishing you and your pup a safe, snuggly, and sparkle-filled holiday. Let’s keep tails wagging and paws grounded this 4th of July.
